WESTMINSTER, MD - The inaugural season for the Carroll Community College women's soccer team ended in a resounding success for the program as the historic season has been capped off by Haley Greenwade earning All-Region 20 First Team honors while Talula Castanzo earned honorable mention.
Greenwade transferred to Carroll Community College from NCAA Division I Eastern Kentucky University and immediately showed the ability to be one of the best players in the region. She etched her name in the record books early on as the first ever Lynx women's soccer player to score a goal as part of a stretch where she scored six goals in two games. A midfielder by trade, Greenwade scored a team high 13 goals while also working hard every game to control the ball in the middle of the field.
"It feels great to be chosen for first team in our region," said Greenwade. "I couldn't do it without our team. I'm proud of us for succeeding while being the first women's soccer team in history."
Greenwade led the team to a 4-7-1 overall record, earning a playoff spot in the team's debut season. She scored at least one goal in seven different games, scoring the game winner in two of them. Even when teams would keep her marked at every second through the game, she still consistently found ways to make plays to help the team.
As for Castanzo, she showed from day one that she had all the makings of a dominant defensive force as she led the efforts of the Lynx defensive line throughout the season. She played in every minute for the entire season as she was able to use her size, speed, and abilities to provide a lock down defense for Carroll.
"I'm so proud of my teammates for making history and it was an honor being a part of the first women's team here at Carroll," said Castanzo. "It feels amazing to be selected as an honorable mention. I couldn't have done it without my team here at Carroll."
While Castanzo did have one goal and one assist on the season, earning postseason honors for a defender is always a challenge without numbers to point to. A testament to her dominating presence on the field, Castanzo was one of the few defenders named to the All-Region teams.
"Our inaugural season witnessed many accolades and set the bar high from our first win to postseason," said head coach Carl Delmont. "Having two players earn All-Region is another amazing accomplishment and truly a team effort. We are looking to add more talented players for the coming season and look forward to meeting future Lynx All-Region players on the recruiting trail."
